What is RRiS

RRiS is a European programme aimed at preventing and tackling racism, xenophobia, sexism and all forms of discrimination in sport, drawing on the principles of restorative justice. The project is based on the idea that sport can act as a tool for social change, promoting equality, respect and human rights. 

Who is it aimed at

The project is aimed at:

  • Coaches, referees, athletes and officials of sports organisations
  • Members of sports clubs and fans
  • Human rights and anti-discrimination organisations
  • Public bodies and organisations involved in sports policy

Programme Objectives

The RRiS aims to:

  • Preventing discrimination in sport
    To develop educational tools to tackle racism and intolerance
  • Training for sports bodies
    To create a training programme (face-to-face and online) for professionals in the field.
  • Utilising restorative justice
    Promotion of dialogue and reconciliation practices in cases of discrimination.
  • European cooperation
    Establishment of a network of organisations for the exchange of knowledge and good practices. 

Project Activities

The main actions include:

  • Research and documentation of incidents of discrimination in sport
  • Development of an educational programme for sports organisations
  • Educational workshops and awareness-raising activities
  • Establishment of a network of organisations and stakeholders
  • Information campaigns on equality and respect in sport. 

Expected Results

The project will create:

  • An educational programme for sports professionals
  • Research and a report on discrimination in sport
  • Awareness-raising campaigns at European level
  • A European network of organisations working together for social inclusion through sport. 

Impact

The RRiS is expected to contribute to:

  • to reducing incidents of racism and intolerance in sport
  • to strengthening equality and respect within sporting communities
  • to training professionals in managing incidents of discrimination
  • in creating partnerships between organisations at European level.

The project supports the European priority ‘Promoting equality and European values through sport’. 

Why is it important?

Incidents of racism and intolerance in sport are on the rise across Europe. RRiS demonstrates how sport can become a space for dialogue and respect, building inclusive communities.
